The good Shepherd.

Bible Reading: Psalm 23:1-6.

Text: John 10:14 KJV

"I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine."

Who is your shepherd? A shepherd is one who takes care of sheep. God is the ultimate shepherd of all of us. Jesus is the shepherd that God sent and He has this to say in John 10:11 KJV

"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."

It means there is a bad shepherd for Jesus to qualify His shepherdhood as the good one.

Relating this topic to our earlier discussion on the man as the head of the family, he is the shepherd of the household. He should be a good shepherd. The bad shepherd is likened to a hireling. Who is a hireling? He is just a labourer, hired to take care of the sheep for a fee - wages.

According to John 10:12, he is not ready to place himself in danger of protecting the sheep. He will run away when the sheep is in danger or under threat of any kind.

The man as head of the family is the shepherd and should be ready to lay down his life as a good shepherd even as Jesus Christ laid down His life for the church (Eph 5:23-25). As the good shepherd, he should have a close, caring relationship with the sheep (household under his care).

In the same vein, the Pastor of a church is the shepherd of the spiritual sheep under his care too. What are their responsibilities (the head of the family and the pastor)?
